A (liberal’s) open letter to Spotify

Dear Spotify friends,

I’ve been a Premium account holder since September 2009 and I consider myself a big Spotify evangelist. Or at least I was until I read on a Spanish newspaper Spotify’s Lutz Emmerich explanation of the company’s support of the Pope’s visit to Madrid (http://bit.ly/ePhaJF).

First, comparing it to the Haiti earthquake campaign is distasteful. How come a call for humanitarian action after a natural disaster in one of the world’s poorest countries be similar to this controversial semi-festive meeting?

But I guess the previous is a matter of opinion. The real “sin” of Mr. Emmerich business-wise is saying that Premium subscribers have no reason to abandon the service because we won’t be listening to the ads of the event.

I beg your pardon? I have absolutely all reason to stop paying for a service if I think that my money is being used to back something I dislike. And so any customer of any service in any free enough country in any occasion and as they please.

This disregard for your customers is something I never thought it could come from Spotify and has shattered my trust for the company.

It is for this reason that I have decided to cancel my subscription.

Best regards,

Sergi Mesonero
